Penang Gerakan Secretary Oh Tong Keong:
Support Gerakan for political breakthrough
Despite being an opposition party in Penang, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia is committed to serve the people of Penang, said Penang Gerakan Secretary Oh Tong Keong.
However, he hopes the people of Penang will give the required support and an opportunity for Gerakan to participate in the debates at the Penang State Legislative Assembly, hence providing a forum to air their voices better.
Oh pointed out that the two Gerakanists who have served as Penang Chief Ministers, namely the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu and our former National President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon have brought remarkable and substantial contributions to Penang, such as the setting up of free trade industrial zones in Bayan Lepas and providing ample job opportunities for the people of Penang.
Another tremendous performance was the construction of low and low medium cost houses of the various Peoples’ Housing schemes. However, since Parti Gerakan lost all the state seats in Penang in 2008, we are unable to carry out any projects that will bring more benefits to the people of Penang.
To have actual political strength is essential to pursue our political aspirations for the benefit of the people. Therefore we hope the people of Penang will give our candidates, at least two or three of them, a chance to be elected as wakil rakyat in the state assembly. Without which we cannot possibly speak strongly and help pursue the aspirations of the people in the state legislative assembly.
Penang Gerakan Veterans Bureau chairman Cheang Chee Gooi concurred with Oh, adding that electing Penang Gerakan’s representatives into the political structure of the state administration would allow better and more effective monitoring and supervision of the state government, as well as to ensure the policies of the state are consistent with the aspirations of the people.
