PENANG – Penang Gerakan Secretary Oh Tong Keong stressed that a more effective way to improve the hygiene of hawkers and their food is not the issuance of compounds but on educational programs to instil greater awareness.
In conjunction with the National “Public Awareness on the Cleanliness and Hygiene of the Hawkers” movement which was launched by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato’ Mah Siew Keong（马袖强） recently, Penang Gerakan leaders and members visited the Hawkers Centre in Bayan Baru to distribute free aprons, caps and recyclable rubbish tongs to the hawkers.
Oh said it is Gerakan’s objective to promote the “Hygienic Awareness” Campaign.
Its first promotional activity is in Bayan Baru, followed by Jelutong, Batu Kawan, Air Itam & Datuk Keramat hawker’s centres to distribute the same items.
“Although Gerakan is an opposition party in Penang, we still render our hand to help the local government promote hygienic awareness amongst the public. Penang is an internationally renowned food & delicacies centre, and it is very important to maintain good hygiene amongst the hawkers.
The chairman of the Bayan Baru Hawkers Centre Ooi Teong Eng said there are 145 hawker stalls in the centre and they will respond to the call of the federal government to promote cleanliness and good hygiene amongst the public and the hawkers. They are grateful to Gerakan for distributing those hygienic items to the hawkers.
Amongst those present were the hawker centre’s vice-chairman, the chairman of Bayan Baru Gerakan Division Teh Leong Meng, division advisor Wong Mun Hoe, Youth chief Khor Siang Meng and Wanita chief Soh Saw Kim.
Oh hoped the “Green Movement” launched by the state government would not remain a mere slogan but focus on creating awareness amongst the public and the hawkers on the importance of good hygiene.
